![]() The car had been recently rebuilt by one of Ireland’s most revered muscle-car mechanics, Mark Malone. “I will never forget my first experience sitting behind the wheel of an American V8 muscle car: nostalgic, loud, and too cool for school, with presence beyond belief! That was it, right then that second, I was hooked on the American muscle car.” Just weeks after John had his first taste of American muscle from the driver’s seat, he went out and bought the Mk II 1979 Pontiac Firebird Trans Am pictured here. As he explained to Classic & Prestige, however, “as good as a car as it was, it was nothing compared to the enjoyment that can be found in American muscle car.” John’s first contact with American muscle came on a trip to Spain, when he was given the chance to drive a 1967 Ford Mustang Fastback. John had previously owned his fair share of scorchers, the most notable of which was a Mk III Toyota Supra Twin Turbo. “Over the years, I’ve dabbled in many makes and models of high-performance cars, including Japanese and German marques, but my goal was always American ,” says Irish Trans Am owner John Corcoran. Of all Firebirds, the Mk II is the most sought-after and is arguably the best looking, with its lean bodystyling, imposing front end and trademark Firebird bonnet decal. A mere three years after it was launched, however, the first-generation model was replaced by a heavily overhauled Mk II. ![]() The car had a distinctive ‘coke bottle’ body shape and packed a range of powerful engines, which meant it was an instant hit in the late 1960s. Launched in 1967, the Mk I Firebird was a car well ahead of its time in the styling and performance department. With this in mind, Classic & Prestige Annual recently caught up with John Corcoran, an avid classic Trans Am enthusiast and owner, to see if the renowned muscle car truly lives up to its reputation some 40 years after it was first released. ![]() The Trans Am has become an increasingly popular collectable thanks to its timeless style, grace and character. ![]() A car that springs to the minds of most motoring enthusiasts, though, is the legendary Pontiac Firebird Trans Am.
